What Is Bipolar What Is Bipolar? Bipolar disorder is a mental condition that involves episodes of severe mania and depression. These emotional and mental mood swings are more serious than normal 'ups' and 'downs'. Without the right medication, these swings can be very dangerous. Who Can Bipolar Affect? Bipolar affects men and women equally. Normally, it begins in adolescence and continues into adult life, although it can also start in early childhood or as late as middle-age. What Should I Do If I Think I Am Bipolar? See your doctor. Only a medical professional can diagnose you. There are a lot of other mental conditions that bipolar can be mixed up as, so never test yourself or take someone else's medication. Speak to you friends and family to see if they have noticed changes in your behaviour, too. They think they are on top of the world and invincible, sometimes they can hear or see things no one else can, can spend lots of money and run up debt, and can have reckless sexual behaviour. When the lows hit, the place they go to is so dark that while the depression lasts they can't see a way out, and this is dangerous because it increases the risk of suicide. Type II - In type II the person has recurrent depressive periods and brief hypomanic episodes. The elations aren't as severe as they are in Type I, so it's called a hypomanic episode. It's also quite hard to spot if the person is outgoing and busy normally. Rapid Cycling - This is where a person's mood swings more often than four times a year. Sometimes it can cycle in months, weeks, days, and sometimes a person can swing several times in twenty-four hours. Introduce Yourself Fri Mar 21, 2008 10:03 am by Jay Who are you?
